Belmont is one of the hilliest cities on the mid-Peninsula. From El Camino Real the streets rise quickly into Carlmont, the Belmont Hills and the neighborhoods off Ralston Avenue and Alameda de las Pulgas. A remodel here often involves retaining walls, a driveway that's too steep for a truck, and neighbors' cars lining both sides of the street. The flatter blocks near El Camino and the Old County Road area see apartment and commercial work.

Twin Pines Park, just off Ralston near El Camino, is the main event space, with a large meadow and picnic areas. Water Dog Lake and the Belmont Sports Complex draw weekend groups as well.

Getting there from Redwood City

Belmont sits just past San Carlos, so from Redwood City we take US-101 to Ralston Avenue or go straight up El Camino. The same team covers both. In Belmont we usually ask for photos of the street and driveway before the first drop, because the right spot is often decided by the slope rather than by where the crew works.

Belmont hours and rental conditions

The city allows construction from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Sundays and holidays are off. That 10 a.m. Saturday start is later than in Redwood City. For Twin Pines, picnic areas are reserved online, and other facility rentals need an application submitted 30 days in advance. Insurance is required for 100 or more guests or for alcohol, and security is required for alcohol events of 150 guests or more.

Belmont setups that work

• A standard unit at the top or bottom of a steep driveway, wherever the truck can stop safely.
• A handwashing station for school fair food booths.
• Several units, including an ADA-accessible unit, for a Twin Pines meadow reunion.
• A restroom trailer for a backyard party on one of the flatter lots near El Camino.
